City Governments Need Deliberative Democracy

Democracy Renewal published an article highlighting findings from recent research into the impact of and relationship between networks and innovation in local government. As part of a large EU-funded research project, the authors examined what actors outside and inside city governments viewed as important, and what common grounds could be found between these. The research project compared three European city governments in three different national contexts – Copenhagen, Rotterdam and Barcelona. The research comprised a survey of politicians and senior administrators and interviews with community leaders. It compared what the insiders and outsiders reported were the most important socioeconomic challenges faced, and the most significant innovations introduced.
